Dear Crisp County Families,

The Crisp County School System is committed to providing learning environments where students can focus, engage, and thrive. In support of this goal and Georgia law, the Crisp County Board of Education has approved a new Distraction-Free Learning Policy, which will take effect beginning July 1, 2026.

What is the new law?

“House Bill 340: To amend Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to elementary and secondary education, so as to enact the "Distraction-Free Education Act"; to require local school systems and public schools to enact policies and procedures for use of personal electronic devices at school and school sponsored events by students in kindergarten through eighth grade; to provide for permissible student use of personal electronic devices; to authorize the Department of Education to provide guidance and technical assistance; to prohibit certain waivers; to provide for definitions; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.”

Board Policy, JCDAF: Use of Electronic Devices by Students, applies to all students in grades K–12 while on school premises during school hours

What devices are included?

This policy restricts the use of personal electronic devices during the instructional day. Devices covered under this policy include cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, e-readers, headphones, earbuds, and any device capable of wireless communication, internet access, messaging, video recording, gaming, social media access, or data transmission.

Why this matters?

The Board approved this policy at its December 8, 2025 meeting, based on growing evidence that limiting device use during the school day leads to stronger academic performance, fewer distractions, and more meaningful student-to-student and student-to-teacher interactions. Students who violate the policy will be subject to discipline procedures outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. These procedures are designed to be age-appropriate and focus on consistency and accountability.

What are the exceptions?

Certain students are exempt from this policy, including those whose Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or medical plan explicitly requires the use of a personal electronic device. In these cases, devices may be used as outlined in the approved plan.

How will we work together?

We understand the importance of communication during the school day. Parents who need to reach their child during school hours should contact their school’s front office, which will ensure timely delivery of messages.

Personal electronic devices may be accessed during approved school activities (examples shown on attached graphic), in accordance with appropriate use guidelines in the Student Code of Conduct.

We appreciate your partnership as we work together to create focused, engaging learning environments for every student.

Sincerely,

Crisp County School System
