Crisp County High School is proud to announce an amazing accomplishment by one of our senior students.
Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Makenzy Powell has won the Legion of Valor Award for 2026. The Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement is one of the highest and most prestigious national honors awarded to high school JROTC cadets and college ROTC cadets.
Major Cedric Felton says he knew Cadet Powell was a great candidate for this award.
"In April, our brigade asked for nominations for the Legion of Valor. We had several cadets that were qualified, but I knew only Cadet Powell could win the award. Since her freshman year, she has been a pleasure to work with. I am extremely proud of her, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her," Major Felton said.
The Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Inc., was designed to stimulate the development of leadership and gives an award annually for achievement of scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects. This award, a bronze cross and certificate, is presented to outstanding let–2 and let–3 cadets worldwide. Typically, one out of four thousand cadets receives this award.
This year, Sixth Brigade was awarded only eight, and the Cougar Battalion is proud to have one of those eight. To put it in perspective, the Sixth Brigade covers Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Puerto Rico. This indeed is a great accomplishment.
Cadet Powell started JROTC her freshman year in 2023. Cadet Powell is currently a let-4 and a remarkable leader as well as follower. Cadet Powell’s journey through these three years has been truly amazing. Cadet Powell joined the Raider, drill, JLAB, and saber teams.
She also volunteered her time to work sporting events and numerous other obligations in the community. Cadet Powell accepted the challenge of being a leader and later in the semester attended her first promotion board. She currently serves as the battalion commander for the Cougar Battalion.
